This was one of the most open and honest discussions I’ve heard about the arts scene in NYC. Kudos to both of you for going there.

I enjoyed this conversation but Im not sure the discussion around jeffrey lewis and wesley yang really pointed to some great injustice. The idea that there is a more institutionally powerful mainstream group (status quo) that might not let in the more edgy newcomers (avant garde) seems like an old story going back to atleast 200 years of the arts. We also live in a time where every artist has to decide if they are going to try to court the remaining gatekeepers or build their own scene/audience (hickey). Also this discussion about being discriminated against because of your perceived politics lacked discussion of what those perceived politics actually are. Enjoyed the show as always.

I more or less agree. Nothing radically new about the context. But the dynamic does wax and wane over time, and I think his book would have had a better reception in 2008 than it did in 2018.

Also, I totally forgot to make clear in Matt's case what the offending politics actually were, which was a hosting error on my part. :(
